Did Jesus Go to Hell for 3 Days?

Did Jesus go to hell for three days—and did He suffer there?

It’s a question that has shaped a lot of belief, and for many people, it comes with a very specific picture: Jesus being tormented after the cross, continuing to pay for sin.

You’ve probably heard the phrase from the Apostles’ Creed:

“He descended into hell…”

That statement has been repeated by believers for centuries. It came from an early summary of Christian belief developed in the first few centuries of the church. While the apostles themselves didn’t write it word-for-word, it reflects what early Christians believed and taught.

But here’s the real question:

What did they actually mean?

Start at the Cross

If we’re going to answer this question, we don’t start in hell. We start at the cross.

In John 19:30, Jesus said:

“It is finished.”

Not almost finished. Not partially finished. Finished.

That word speaks of a completed transaction. The full payment for sin was made at the cross. There was nothing left to add, nothing left to complete somewhere else.

He didn’t say, “I’ll finish this in hell.”

He said it was finished.

And then He said:

“Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”

Not into torment. Not into Satan’s hands. Into the Father’s hands.

That alone should cause us to pause.

Jesus Told Us Where He Was Going

We don’t have to guess what happened next. Jesus told us.

In Luke 23:43, He said to the thief on the cross:

“Today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Not later. Not after suffering. Today.

Whatever happened after the cross, it included Paradise—not torment.

Understanding “Hell”

Much of the confusion comes from the word “hell.”

In many places, the Bible uses the word Hades, which means the realm of the dead. It does not always refer specifically to a place of torment.

In Luke 16, Jesus describes this realm as divided:

  • A place of comfort (often called Abraham’s bosom or Paradise)

  • A place of torment

  • A great gulf separating the two

So when we hear “He descended into hell,” it does not automatically mean Jesus went to suffer.

Did Jesus Descend?

Yes. Scripture says He descended into the lower parts of the earth (Ephesians 4:9).

But descent is not the same as suffering.

That’s where many get it wrong.

What Happened When He Descended?

1 Peter 3:19 says Jesus went and preached to the spirits in prison.

That word “preached” does not mean He was being punished or trying to get people saved. It means to proclaim, to announce, to declare.

He wasn’t being tormented.

He was making a declaration.

He Went as a Victor

Colossians 2 says Jesus disarmed principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them.

That is not the language of suffering.

That is the language of victory.

If Jesus had to suffer in hell, then the cross was not enough. But Scripture never points to hell for redemption. It always points to the cross and the blood of Jesus.

The work was completed at Calvary.

The Conclusion

Did Jesus go to hell for three days?

He entered the realm of the dead, yes. But He did not go there to suffer.

He went to proclaim victory.

He didn’t go to be harmed—He went to disarm.

Jesus didn’t continue the work in hell. He went because the work was already finished.
